Florida Medical Marijuana Renewal: Two Dates Patients Need to Know
Your Florida medical marijuana ID card and your physician certification are connected, but they are not the same renewal. Each has its own status, and taking care of one does not automatically complete the other.
Keeping track of both can help you know when to contact your physician and when to submit your state application. Here is what to check before your next renewal.
First, know the difference
Your Medical Marijuana Use Registry identification card is issued through Florida's Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU). The state requires patients to renew it annually.
Your physician certification is entered in the registry by your qualified physician after an evaluation. Your physician also places the applicable orders. The office can tell you when your certification and orders need attention and whether another appointment is needed.
These dates can be different. An active card does not mean your physician certification and orders are current, and a physician visit does not automatically renew your state ID card.
Check your state card expiration date
Look at your identification card or sign in to the Medical Marijuana Use Registry to check your card status. OMMU says patients must submit a renewal application annually and provides a renewal window beginning 45 days before the card expires. You may apply online or by mail and must submit the required fee and any required documents.
Start early enough to address missing information or payment issues. A submitted application is not the same as an approved card. For current instructions and fees, visit the OMMU identification card page.
Ask your physician about your certification and orders
Contact your qualified physician's office before your certification or orders expire. Ask the team to confirm the relevant dates and explain what your next visit involves. Do not assume the card expiration date tells you when your physician appointment is due.
When you call, these questions can help:
- When do my current physician certification and orders expire?
- Do I have a current or scheduled certification with open orders in the registry?
- When should I schedule my next evaluation?
- What is the physician's renewal fee, and are there other clinic charges?
- What information should I have available for my appointment?
Only your qualified physician can decide whether to renew your certification after evaluating your circumstances.
A 2026 change connects the two steps
Beginning July 27, 2026, OMMU says patients cannot complete an initial or renewal ID card application without current or scheduled certifications with open orders in the registry. If you encounter a problem with your certification or orders, contact your qualified physician. For application questions, follow the OMMU renewal guidance.
This requirement makes it especially useful to check both sides before your card renewal window. Your physician's office and the state handle different parts of the process.
Can a renewal appointment be done by telehealth?
Florida allows a qualified physician to use telehealth for certain subsequent examinations to renew a patient's certification after that same physician has examined the patient in person. Availability and suitability depend on the physician and the circumstances of the visit.
If you are changing physicians, the new qualified physician must conduct an in-person examination before later recertification by telehealth. Ask the office which appointment type applies to you. The OMMU physician FAQs explain these requirements.
What if a date has already passed?
Contact your physician's office and check your state registry account rather than assuming that one renewal will fix both issues. Explain whether your card has expired, your certification or orders have expired, or you are unsure. The office can help you understand the physician appointment; OMMU can answer state application questions.
Avoid assuming that submitting an application or scheduling a visit immediately restores an active card, certification or order. Confirm the status of each step before making plans.
A simple renewal checklist
- Check your state card expiration date and set a reminder for its renewal window.
- Ask your physician's office about your certification and order dates.
- Schedule any needed evaluation and ask whether it is in person or eligible for telehealth.
- Confirm that your certification and orders meet the current registry application requirement.
- Submit your state renewal application with the required payment and documents, then check its status.
- Keep a separate reminder for each future date.
