How to Switch Medical Marijuana Doctors in Florida

To switch medical marijuana doctors in Florida, arrange an evaluation with a new qualified physician, update your physician connection in the Medical Marijuana Use Registry, and confirm your care with the new office. Plan the timing with that office before changing your Registry profile. Your state ID card, physician certification and orders each need attention during the handoff.

This guide explains what to check before a transfer, where to find the current Registry controls, and what to ask at your appointment.

Understand which part of your care is changing

A physician transfer changes the doctor responsible for your medical cannabis care. Your annual Registry ID card application is a separate process. A follow-up certification visit with the same physician is another appointment type.

Florida requires an active Registry ID card to purchase and possess medical marijuana. Check the expiration date on the Registry’s card page before planning a transfer. If renewal is also due, use our Florida card renewal guide alongside these steps. Changing doctors does not complete that renewal application for you.

1. Confirm your new physician and appointment first

Ask the receiving office whether it accepts transfer patients, which physician you would see, and where the evaluation will take place. Florida’s official physician search can help you check the individual physician’s program qualifications.

Tell the office that you already have a Registry profile. Ask when it wants you to leave your current physician in the Registry and how it coordinates activation under the new doctor. This gives you an agreed sequence instead of changing your profile before you have appointment instructions.

2. Ask for the full transfer evaluation cost

Get the current transfer appointment price directly from the receiving clinic. Ask what the charge covers, what later visits cost, and which cancellation or refund terms apply. A new-patient or renewal promotion may describe a different appointment from the one you need.

Keep clinic charges separate from state card charges. OMMU lists a $75 application processing fee for the Registry ID card. That card application fee does not establish a clinic’s transfer evaluation price. Our Florida cost guide explains the separate expenses and online payment charges.

3. Prepare your information for the clinical visit

Ask the office which documents it needs and how to send them securely. Depending on its intake process, you may be asked for identification, your Registry patient number and relevant medical records.

Prepare a current medication and supplement list, questions about your care, and the contact details for an office that holds records you want the new physician to review. Ask whether a records-release authorization is needed and how long the office expects that process to take.

Keep medical information in the clinic’s designated secure intake process. Use a general phone inquiry to ask what to prepare rather than sending medical records through ordinary email.

4. Update the physician connection in the Registry

When the receiving office tells you it is time to update the connection, follow OMMU’s patient instructions for leaving a physician. The current guide uses these controls:

  1. Sign in at the official Medical Marijuana Use Registry.
  2. Open Manage Your Information, then Patient Profile.
  3. Find Leave Physician on the profile and review the confirmation before proceeding.
  4. Contact the receiving office so the new physician can activate you under their care.

If the profile shows no current physician or has no leave option, the OMMU guide directs you to contact the new physician for activation. If your screen differs, follow the latest official instructions or ask OMMU for help at 800-808-9580. Avoid creating a second patient account to work around a login problem.

5. Attend the new physician’s in-person evaluation

Florida’s physician FAQs say a patient changing qualified physicians needs an in-person physical examination with the new physician. This applies even when both doctors belong to the same practice. After that examination, the same physician may conduct eligible recertification visits through telehealth.

At your visit, discuss your history and questions with the physician. An existing card or a previous certification does not guarantee a new treatment recommendation.

Before leaving, ask the office to explain your current certification and order status, any next steps in the Registry, and when follow-up is needed. Do not assume previous orders will carry over unchanged. The receiving physician should explain your individual care plan.

Keep this transfer checklist with your appointment notes

  • Confirm the receiving physician’s name and examination address.
  • Get the transfer fee and follow-up terms in writing.
  • Check your card expiration date separately.
  • Ask which records and identification to prepare.
  • Agree on when to update the Registry connection.
  • Confirm activation, order status and the next follow-up with the new office.

Common transfer questions

Can I complete a doctor transfer entirely online?

You can handle Registry profile steps online. Florida requires an in-person examination with the new qualified physician. Confirm the visit arrangements before booking.

Does switching doctors renew my state card?

The annual card application remains separate. Check your card status and follow OMMU’s card application and renewal guidance if it is due.

What if I cannot find the option to leave my physician?

Check the current physician section and the latest OMMU instructions. Contact the receiving office or the OMMU patient helpline for help with your profile.
