Are CBD products safe? Risks and questions to discuss

CBD is a cannabis compound. Products sold as CBD are not interchangeable with an FDA-approved prescription medicine. Their contents, strength and quality can vary, and some may contain THC or contaminants.

What risks should you discuss?

CBD can cause liver injury, drowsiness and interactions with other medicines. Tell your health professional about prescriptions, nonprescription medicines, supplements and any cannabis products you use. A product being sold legally does not establish that it is safe or effective for your condition.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

The FDA advises against cannabis, THC and CBD use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Discuss symptoms and treatment options with your health professional.

Prescription CBD is different

Epidiolex is a prescription CBD medicine for specific seizure conditions. Its approval does not mean retail oils, gummies or other CBD products are approved treatments. Ask your physician what evidence applies to your condition and which interactions matter for you.
